The Feix Cross, Wayside Shrine, Nová Ves nad Nisou

Known locally simply as “at the Cross”.

An iron cross with metal hood and cast figurines on a plinth of granite blocks inscribed with the date 1829. The original shrine comprised an iron cross with Jesus, the Virgin Mary and one other figure painted on a metal plate. The original plinth blocks, now lying adjacent on the ground was adorned with a bronze plaque bearing this inscription:

Stůj tise můj milý pocestný

vzpomeň, co Ježíš pro tebe učinil.

Povšimni si jeho krvavého potu

potom pokračuj dále na své pouti!

Věnováno otci, který tiše r.1824 zesnul, od jeho synu Eliáše a Josefa Feixe.

(Here stand silent, traveller beloved

Remember that which for you Jesus suffered.

Witness now His blood-red sweat

And continue on your pilgrimage!

Dedicated to our father, who silently passed away, 1824, from his sons Elias and Josef Feix.)

In the surroundings:

On climbing up to the Kynast Ridge a short cut takes us by the forest, which conceals a number of picturesque rock outcrops. Although the hill today has no established name, historically it was known as Wagner’s, the family which owned and lived on the lands to the northeast. Moving on from the “Cross” to Lučany the Fatře inn, another shrine, dating 1846 and a memorial to the Wagner family, is visible above the railway tunnel. In those days Nová Ves extended as far as the Krkonoše Road in Lučany until the district was divided in 1899.

This is a scheduled monument protected by the State.

In 2007 the Novoveský okrašlovací spolek (Nová Ves Society) was formed to look after the shrines. In 2011 this organization manage to their restoration.
