Nová Ves Stream – Kögler’s Hill

Nová Ves nad Nisou 46827

A few hundred metres up the road from the Nová Vesrailway station the Nová Ves Stream flows under the road. A steep forest path follows the stream uphill, known locally simply as the “Shortcut” (Zkratka). Old maps refer to the tumbling stream as “Hučící vodou” (roaring water). Until the early 1900s the steep waterfall was strewn with boulders. In spring, when the stream was in spate, uncontrolled floodwaters threatened property and industry in the vicinity downstream. In the 1920s a costly damming project was undertaken to control the flow, where huge granite blocks were placed at intervals along the stream creating a series of consecutive weirs. The stream looks its best in the Spring months when melt water flows powerfully over the stone steps. The steep gully is known locally as Kögler’s Hill, after a notorious bandit whose activities – including murder - were brought to an abrupt end on 23rd March, 1897 at the gallows of the Liberec court. According to legend the outlaw went to his death smiling. The previous day he had left the court with the exclamation: “Na, da labt ock gsund”, which in Jizera Mountain dialect means, “Live here in health!”. At night when walking the path close to the boisterous flooding stream, unable to hear your own footsteps, remember Kögler.

The large building at the upper part of the falls is the former Sand Mill, where sand was ground fro the long-gone Nová Ves glassworks.
