Marian column in Frýdlant

Kostelní náměstí
Frýdlant
Marian column is situated in the middle of the Church square, near the church of The Finding of St. Cross, in the central part of the town’s urban conservation area. Originally this column stood in the Frýdlant square (now T. G. Masaryka), where it was erected by Frýdlant burgess Tobias Stracke and his son Josef Stracke as a gift to the local people that survived the plague epidemic. The column was moved in 1898 after the final decree of the city council on 19th March 1897.

The work itself was designed by a sculptor Ondřej Dubke in spirit of High Baroque in 1723.

It is traditional style of Marian columns, in the lower part there is quite a slim prism pedestal with volute brackets, cornices and statues. The statues are the portraits of St. Ann, Joachim, Joseph and St. John Evangelist. The footstall connects to a long slim shaft with a composite capital, on which a statue of Immaculate (Virgin Mary). As material for this column was used medium-grain sandstone of grey-ochre colour, obtained probably from the west-Bohemian quarries.

The Marian column has been restored twice in its history. The restoration from the early 1990s had proven to be very poor. An inadequate cement supplements were used, thanks to which in connection with bad weather the stone parts started to deteriorate. As a result of this fact in 2008 the new full restoration was commenced. It cost in total around one quarter of a million Czech crowns.
